How to read your espresso

How to read your espresso

A grinder setting is only a starting point. Your cup tells you what to try next.

Keep a simple record

Write down your coffee dose, drink yield, and shot time. Keep the coffee, basket, and preparation consistent while you explore a setting.

Sour and sharp

A very sharp cup can suggest that your recipe needs more extraction. Try a small change in grind or yield, then taste again. Coffee character and your preferences matter too.

Bitter and drying

A harsh, drying finish can suggest a recipe that is pushing too far. Try a slightly coarser grind or a shorter yield. Change one variable at a time.

Flat or muddled

Look at freshness, preparation, and consistency before making several adjustments. An even dose and repeatable distribution help you understand what the grinder is doing.

Find your own starting point

There is no single setting for every grinder. Our Night Watch Espresso gives you a generous coffee to begin with. The Private Grinder Setup adds personal guidance when you need it.
